The Rider Post | 23 décembre 2016 Big wave : le wipe-out qui a failli coûter la vie à Tom Lowe SURF Water Tom Lowe a pris des gros risques sur une vague gigantesque en Irlande et a été sauvé in-extremis par ses potes d’une mort certaine… Il y a quelques jours, avait lieu une compétition officielle de grosses vagues à Nazaré (Portugal), un spot réputé pour ces effroyables murs d’eau et ces records historiques. Le surfeur anglais n’a pu y participer et pour se venger, il est allé affronter les vagues sauvages de Mullaghmore en Irlande. Comme on peut le voir dans la vidéo tout en bas (qui a deux ans), ce spot est complément déchainé et les vagues sont aussi grosses que folles. Tom Lowe a réalisé son erreur un peu tard car il s’est pris un mémorable wipe-out et a bien falli y rester sur ce coup-là. Son témoignage est assez troublant et émouvant. Le chargeur de gros a pourtant l’habitude de défier ce genre de monstres mais il ne faut jamais sous-estimer les éléments. La vague de Mullaghmore l’a littéralement mis KO et il ne pouvait ni respirer, ni bouger donc impossible d’actionner son gilet de sauvetage dans un premier temps. Une scène d’horreur qui s’est bien terminé uniquement grâce au secours de ses potes (Peter Conroy et Barry Mottershead) qui sont venus le sauver de la noyade. Encore sous le choc, Tom livre ses impressions sur Instagram (juste en dessous). Having hardly processed what went down yesterday I still felt the need to post something before anybody else does. Firstly to give a big shoutout to @pedro2468 and @sligokayaktours for rescuing me, to let my friends and family know I’m all good and to stress the importance in covering as many safety angles as possible when in heavy surf. I for one have paddled with no support many times, that is now going to stop. Yesterday was a big reality check when I fell on a wave at Mullaghmore, the impact knocking the air out my lungs and I couldn’t feel my arms to inflate, a hold-down followed. Swallowing water I was in a bad place, never been so scared. I surfaced for a split second but couldn’t breath and the next one rolled over. I was out of it, like freedive training when you briefly blackout. If not for my impact suit I wouldn’t have surfaced in time. Barry and Pete were straight on me with ski support, Pete got me on the sled where it took a while before I could breath property. Next thing I’m sitting there with Santa administering oxygen and @noahlane_ getting the shot.
